The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone. You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil. For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore.

어둠 속에서 걷던 백성이 큰 빛을 보았고 죽음의 그림자가 드리운 땅에 사는 사람들 위에 빛이 비쳤다. '주께서 이 백성을 번성케 하셨고 기쁨을 키워 주셨습니다. 사람들이 추수할 때 기뻐하고 전리품을 나눌 때 즐거워하듯이 그들이 주 앞에서 기뻐합니다. 그들을 짓누르던 멍에와 어깨를 내리치던 회초리와 압제자의 몽둥이를, 미디안을 꺾으시던 날처럼 주께서 부숴 버리셨기 때문입니다. 쿵쿵거리며 짓밟았던 모든 군화와 피범벅이 된 모든 군복이 땔감으로 불에 타 사라졌기 때문입니다.' 한 아이가 우리를 위해 태어났다. 우리가 한 아들을 얻었다. 그의 어깨에는 주권이 있고 그의 이름은 기묘자, 모사, 전능하신 하나님, 영원하신 아버지, 평화의 왕이라 불릴 것이다. 그분의 넘치는 주권과 평화는 다윗의 보좌와 그의 왕국 위에 끝없이 펼쳐질 것이다. 지금부터 영원히 공평과 정의로 그것을 견고히 세우실 것이다. 만군의 여호와의 열정이 이것을 이루실 것이다.
